about

Available as part of the October instalment of Lost Map’s PostMap subscription service, and via digital platforms from November 5, ‘Elixir’ (Single Version) is a stunning brand-new take on a track from French singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Clémentine March’s eclectic, charming and truly cosmopolitan debut album Le Continent, which was released in January 2020. Originally a stripped-back and lo-fi acoustic number, ‘Elixir’ has been given new life by producer Toby Burroughs (of the band POZI), with Clémentine on vocals and flute and joined by Phil MFU f(Vanishing Twin) on Moog and electronics, Ursula Russell (Snapped Ankles) on drums, James Howard (Blue House, Dana Gavanski) on bass and Dimitrios Ntontis on organ and synths. Catchy indie melodies merge with a tight drum and bass groove, before wigging out into a psychedelic opus. Think Belle & Sebastian’s ‘Legal Man’ reimagined by Stereolab and remixed by Amorphous Androgynous. Cosmic!

“After trying a full personal French narrative and storytelling for my first album Le Continent, I’ve been exploring new sounds and possibilities on the path to the second album, as well as trying to explore writing in English more,” says Clémentine. “I used this song as a template for experimentations. Playing ‘Elixir’ live for long minutes with the band made me frustrated there wasn't a proper recording of this improvisational party. ‘Elixir’ is the first single of a series that will be released, following that path to a more collective work around performance and improvisation. The sessions are produced by Toby Burroughs, also mastermind of the post-punk trio POZI.”

‘Elixir's’ music video was directed and imagined by Jack Barraclough in early September 2020 – a psychedelic absurdist magnet fishing journey into the heart of London's deserted financial sector and bank chains, turned redundant during the pandemic. In this unexpected ghost town, isn't it time to recycle and reclaim our communality? Jack Barraclough has made several stunning videos and visual work for Seamus Fogarty, Françóis and the Atlas Mountains, Etienne Daho and Sacred Paws, as well as Clémentine’s own Le Continent.
